Signature Projects are intended to bring focus to a selection of U.S. Department of Energy's Water Power Technologies Office (WPTO) projects. By designating a Signature Project, the project reports, datasets, and associated papers can be easily discoverable. By bringing together all aspects of a project, whether a completed legacy project or an ongoing investigation, the MRE community can be informed of what investigations have been undertaken, which have succeeded, what tools are available, and where gaps in information persist.

WEC-Sim: Experimental Validation

Project Summary

The WEC-Sim Project is a collaboration between the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) and Sandia National Laboratories (Sandia) to develop and maintain WEC-Sim (Wave Energy Converter SIMulator), an open-source code for simulating wave energy converters.

Experimental Validation

Documents tagged under Experimental Validation present measurement data taken during laboratory tests that are compared against WEC-Sim outputs to verify that modeling techniques are working properly and accurate. The experimental validation cases focus solely on wave energy converters (WECs) with examples covering point absorber WECs, oscillating surge WECs, rotating mass WECs, and oscillating water column WECs, as well as other multi-body systems. The results presented in these works demonstrate that WEC-Sim is capable of accurately modeling a wide range of multi-body floating systems, but also highlight new advanced features that can be developed to cover a wider range of devices and operations with unique needs.
