Marine Energy Databases

The list below compiles and provides access to external databases. While the respective scopes of each of the databases are varied, all convey information relevant to marine renewable energy. The list of databases is not exhaustive and will be updated as needed. If you have comments on incorrect or missing material, please email tethys@pnnl.gov.

Marine Cadastre Current, Wave United States of America Marine Cadastre is an integrated marine information system that provides data, tools, and technical support for ocean and Great Lakes planning. Developed through a partnership between the U.S.'s National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM), Marine Cadastre provides information regarding biologically important areas, maritime boundaries, offshore wind technology depth zones, offshore tidal stream, wave, and wind resource potentials, and more. 
MRE Software Current, Wave United States of America MRE Software is a collection of software relevant to marine energy development that is organized into the PRIMRE Code Catalog, a searchable online discovery platform for open-source and commercial software, and the MRE Code Hub, a collection of open-source software for simulating devices, and processing and analyzing data. MRE Software is one of several Knowledge Hubs within the Portal and Repository for Information on Marine Renewable Energy (PRIMRE) system.
Digital Coast United States of America The Digital Coast, managed by NOAA’s Office for Coastal Management, was developed to meet the unique needs of the coastal management community and provides not only coastal data, but also the tools, training, and information needed to make these data truly useful. Data sets range from economic data to satellite imagery.
Materials & Structures Testing Database Current, Wave United States of America The U.S. Department of Energy’s Wind Energy Technologies Office and Water Power Technologies Office have funded Sandia National Laboratories and its partner, Montana State University, to conduct extensive testing and analysis on wind turbine blades and materials for marine energy devices in support of the industry and research communities. The results of over 16,000 tests on 500 materials (since 1989 for wind, and more recently for water) have been compiled and published annually in a public database along with numerous technical publications analyzing the key trends and technical results of the tests.
Data.gov United States of America Data.gov is managed and hosted by the U.S. General Services Administration's Technology Transformation Service. Data.gov hosts a ton of datasets across a variety of topics, including energy, ocean, and manufacturing. 
MHK Instrumentation & Sensor Database Current, Wave United States of America The MHK Instrumentation & Sensor Database provides data on a range of test capabilities within the United States Database funded by Department of Energy. It is a comprehensive, open and searchable sensor and instrumentation database and community of practice for the international MHK community to contribute and draw information, to openly discuss topics relevant to measurement and testing, and to ask and answer questions.
Federal Energy Regulatory Commission's (FERC) eLibrary Current, Wave United States of America The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission's (FERC) eLibrary maintains a record of all permit-related documents for sites under their jurisdiction, which includes all U.S. MHK projects. Users can conduct general searches or enter a specific docket number to search through the eLibrary. Note the eLibrary contains MHK filings, as well as conventional hydrokinetic project filings.
OpenEI Current, Wave United States of America OpenEI is an energy information portal sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy and developed by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory in support of the Open Government Initiative to make energy data transparent, participatory, and collaborative. In wiki format, OpenEI hosts a collection of content and data on a wide variety of topics from renewable energy resources and technologies, policy and regulations, and analyzed and raw data. 
Data Basin United States of America Data Basin is a science-based mapping and analysis platform that supports learning, research, and sustainable environmental stewardship. The core of Data Basin is free and provides open access to thousands of scientifically-grounded, biological, physical, and socio-economic datasets on specific topics, geographies, and projects. Data Basin's Gateways include a subset of the data available on Data Basin and showcase spatial information for a particular project or organization. 
Marine and Hydrokinetic Data Repository (MHKDR) Current, Wave, Salinity Gradient, OTEC United States of America The Marine and Hydrokinetic Data Repository (MHKDR), hosted on OpenEI, is the repository for all data collected using funds from the Water Power Technologies Office of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). It contains data on MHK devices, testing, resource and environmental impact assessments, cost analyses, and more. MHKDR is one of several Knowledge Hubs within the Portal and Repository for Information on Marine Renewable Energy (PRIMRE) system.
Marine Energy Projects Database Current, Wave, Salinity Gradient, OTEC United States of America The U.S. Department of Energy's Marine Energy Projects Database, hosted on OpenEI, provides up-to-date information on marine and hydrokinetic renewable energy, both in the U.S. and around the world. The database includes wave, tidal, current, and ocean thermal energy, and contains information on the various energy conversion technologies, companies active in the field, and development of projects in the water. The Marine Energy Projects Database is one of several Knowledge Hubs within the Portal and Repository for Information on Marine Renewable Energy (PRIMRE) system.
Hydrodynamic Testing Facilities Database Current, Wave United States of America The U.S. Department of Energy's Hydrodynamic Testing Facilities Database, hosted on OpenEI, couples a map-based viewer with a list of hydrodynamic testing facilities to provide data on a range of testing capabilities and services available at commercial, academic, and government facilities, as well as offshore berths, within the United States.
Telesto Current, Wave, Salinity Gradient, OTEC United States of America Telesto provides information and guidance for testing, measurement, and data analysis for marine energy research, development, and demonstration. It also features the Testing Facilities Database, a collection of device testing facilities, and the Sensor and Instrumentation Database, a catalogued collection of sensors and instruments used by the marine energy industry. Telesto is one of several Knowledge Hubs within the Portal and Repository for Information on Marine Renewable Energy (PRIMRE) system.
Tethys Current, Wave, Salinity Gradient, OTEC United States of America Tethys is an online knowledge management system that provides access to information on the environmental effects of wind and marine renewable energy. Launched by the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory to support the U.S. Department of Energy’s Water Power Technologies Office and Wind Energy Technologies Office, Tethys houses thousands of peer reviewed papers, technical reports, geospatial content, and other media and metadata. Tethys is one of several Knowledge Hubs within the Portal and Repository for Information on Marine Renewable Energy (PRIMRE) system.
Marine Energy Atlas Current, Wave, Salinity Gradient, OTEC United States of America Marine Energy Atlas is an interactive mapping tool developed by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory that maps US wave, tidal, riverine current, ocean current, and ocean thermal resources. It supports everything from project siting to device design through high-resolution and spatially comprehensive data sets. Marine Energy Atlas is one of several Knowledge Hubs within the Portal and Repository for Information on Marine Renewable Energy (PRIMRE) system.
UKDMOS United Kingdom The United Kingdom Directory of Marine Observing Systems (UKDMOS), is a unique internet-based searchable database of marine monitoring conducted by UK organizations. Aiming to fulfill the basic requirement to know where, when and what is being monitored in the marine environment around the UK and provide information to help coordinate monitoring across different organizations, UKDMOS is a tool for searching monitoring programs and series based on information such as the parameters measured or the frequency of measurements taken. UKDMOS is managed and updated by the Marine Environmental Data and Information Network (MEDIN).
Supergen ORE Hub Research Landscape Current, Tidal, Wave United Kingdom The Supergen ORE Hub Research Landscape is an interactive web tool that allows you to explore the latest information, research and technical challenges across the offshore wind, wave and tidal energy sectors. With information drawn from across academia, industry and policy makers, the tool is intended to provide an open and easily accessible data source of current research within offshore renewable energy which can be used by a range of stakeholders.
UK Marine Energy Database (UKMED) Current, Wave United Kingdom Renewable UK's Marine Energy Database (UKMED) is a growing map and database of wave and tidal sites in the UK. The interactive map enables users to view project details including technology type, ownership, and project status.
Wave & Tidal Knowledge Network (WTKN) Current, Wave United Kingdom The Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult's Wave & Tidal Knowledge Network (WTKN) is an open access database that contains reports, datasets, and project data related to environmental impacts and consents, grid connections, health and safety, and more. 
Renewable Energy Facilities Current, Wave United Kingdom Renewable Energy Facilities, hosted by Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult, is a directory of renewable energy testing facilities throughout the United Kingdom. 
Marine Data Exchange Current, Wave United Kingdom The Marine Data Exchange is a system that The Crown Estate has developed to store, manage, and disseminate offshore survey data and project reports provided by their offshore renewable and marine aggregates customers. 
MEDIN Portal United Kingdom The Marine Environmental Data and Information Network (MEDIN) promotes sharing of, and improved access to, these data. It is an open partnership and its partners represent government departments, research institutions, and private companies. The MEDIN portal is a map-based portal that contains information about nearly 15,000 marine datasets from over 400 UK organizations. 
REsource Current, OTEC, Salinity Gradient, Wave International The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) is an intergovernmental organization that supports countries in their transition to a sustainable energy future. IRENA's REsource portal enables users to search for renewable energy information, publications, and data and statistics by energy source, country, or technology. 
Biofouling Database International As part of the OCEANIC Project, the European Biofouling Database is a specific output which aims to provide developers, operators, and regulators a quick overview of geographical biofouling distribution facilitating informed decisions. The database provides information on the organisms’ occurrence and key biofouling parameters to the MRE sector, aiming to inform developers planning their projects. The database is updated frequently and a final version can be requested via a form on the website.
ORECCA Current, Wave International The European Union's Offshore Renewable Energy Conversion - Coordinated Action (ORECCA) Project catalogs offshore renewable data in Europe on European, regional, and national levels in a map-based platform.
