American Electric Power (AEP) provided a presentation, “Community Energy Storage (CES) at AEP”, which included a discussion of AEP's evolution from substation scale NaS Batteries to smaller energy units located closer to the customer but operated as a fleet to achieve system benefits comparable to the larger battery systems. AEP Ohio is installing 80-25 KW units on a distribution circuit as part of a Department of Energy Stimulus Demonstration Project. CES utilizes individual battery controls and a control hub to provide peak shaving ability at a system level and the ability island small groups of customers during outages of their primary circuit. The presentation covered reasons for moving to CES, basic specifications, and experience to date in testing and installing units in the Columbus, OH area.
