Marine Energy Research Australia (MERA)
The UWA Wave Energy Research Centre was awarded $3.75 million from the Western Australian Government, under the Royalties for Regions program, to establish Centre headquarters in the Great Southern and to attract new staff and students to live in the region. GSMRF uses the historic railway station and breathes new life into this iconic harbour side building. Fully refurbished internally, while maintaining its heritage-listed exterior, GSMRF has been operating as headquarters since mid 2019. The small Albany team comprises key personnel in operations, oceanography/coastal processes and hydrodynamics/wave-structure interaction. Perth-based core members and research associates visit GSMRF regularly and add to local research and outreach activities.
