The Development and Deployment of a Cabled Research Node for Marine Energy and Blue Economy Testing

Abstract

Field testing opportunities for small and prototype-scale tidal energy devices are limited due to the relative rarity of suitably fast currents and prohibitive cost of iterative testing in challenging environments. PNNL's Cabled Research Array for the Blue Economy and Energy (CRABEE) was developed to provide four test berths for these devices and the associated "blue economy" technologies that may benefit from them. Here, we present how the requirements for the cable and junction box with four interfaces were developed, how the specific deployment location was selected, and present results on the outcome of deployment and the first year of operation of CRABEE.

The Development and Deployment of a Cabled Research Node for Marine Energy and Blue Economy Testing is located in Washington, United States of America.
