Abstract
While the need to make use of clean, renewable energies in electricity generation is universally understood, Mexico is lagging behind other countries in terms of the contribution these sources have in the production of energy nationally. The first hurdle to overcome is that of providing accurate information for decision makers and potential investors. In the case of renewable marine energy this means, firstly, generating data on the possible installed electrical capacities of the various sources at sites across the country. From this, it is then possible to estimate the economic viability of the implementation of renewable energy projects at specific locations. This work therefore aims to characterize the available power from diverse energy sources around the coasts of Mexico, and to make recommendations of sites where the energy potential warrants further analysis. A literature review of the power available from marine currents, waves, thermal and saline gradient sources was performed for the Mexican Caribbean. Several sites were found to be geographically viable; there is sufficient potential energy available to meet at least part of the energy demands of the Yucatan Peninsula and Cozumel Island. For energy harvested from ocean currents, key sites are to the south of Cozumel Island and in the Cozumel Channel. In the northern part of Quintana Roo there are sites offering great potential for wave energy, while the central part of the state could be suitable for energy generation from thermal gradients. In Chetumal Bay there is potential for saline gradient electricity. Wave energy potential was evaluated for the entire Mexican coast and seven locations are recommended for further investigation. A conservative, gross estimation has shown that wave energy could contribute up to 0.2% of the national demand in the short or mid-term, with relatively small investment and with a low environmental impact.
Estimación teórica de la potencia disponible en las fuentes de energía marina en México
La necesidad de incorporar a las energías renovables en la matriz energética de las naciones del mundo es un valor entendido que no requiere más justificación porque, más allá de metas locales o compromisos internacionales, de ello depende la sostenibilidad de la humanidad. En México, sin embargo, la contribución de las fuentes de energía limpias y renovables en el sistema eléctrico nacional, se mantiene todavía con un cierto rezago. Uno de los principales retos a vencer es la provisión de información útil para la toma de decisiones y que permita dar certeza a los potenciales inversionistas. En el caso de las fuentes de energía marinas esto se traduce, en una primera instancia, en ofrecer datos que permitan vislumbrar la capacidad eléctrica que se podría instalar y con ello estimar la viabilidad del negocio. En ese sentido, este trabajo contribuye a la caracterización de la potencia disponible en las diferentes fuentes aprovechables del océano, a la vez que se hacen recomendaciones de sitios donde ahondar en estudios y análisis. Se realizó una revisión bibliográfica de la potencia en las fuentes: corrientes, térmica y salino para el Caribe Mexicano. Se encontró que existen sitios de aprovechamiento geográficamente viables y con recurso disponible adecuado para cubrir una parte considerable de la demanda eléctrica de la península de Yucatán y la isla Cozumel. Sitios clave son la parte sur de la isla y el canal de Cozumel para corrientes, la parte norte de Quintana Roo para oleaje, la parte central del mismo estado para OTEC y la bahía de Chetumal para gradiente salino. Por lo que respecta a energía undimotriz, componente central de este trabajo, se evaluó de manera teórica todo el litoral nacional, encontrando siete sitios recomendables para analizar a mayor profundidad. Luego de una estimación gruesa y conservadora, se halló que esta fuente de energía podría contribuir, en el corto o mediano plazo con, al menos, un 0.2% de la capacidad instalada nacional.
