Abstract
As both marine energy and aquaculture progress, there is an opportunity to bring together these industries for mutual advancement. This is called co-location, where marine uses (aquaculture and marine energy in this case) are developed within the same space and timeframe.
This Guide for Co-location of Marine Energy and Aquaculture has been developed by the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory to provide guidance for developing co-location projects and to simplify the approach. It is intended for aquaculture operators and marine energy technology developers, particularly those interested in partnering to co-locate new aquaculture and marine energy developments. The Guide is focused on co-locating a new joint project and planning from the outset with both industries but can also be applicable to incorporating marine energy into existing aquaculture operations. The Guide aims to offer insight based on several years of research at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory to explore the feasibility of co-location. While the Guide provides information on aquaculture and marine energy, it aims to serve as a reference and does not replace regulatory guidance for either industry. Engaging with relevant agencies throughout the planning and permitting process will provide the most accurate information applicable to a specific project.
The Guide describes key considerations for co-location for both aquaculture and marine energy, including a framework for assessing co-location and case studies, and details the remaining needs to move both industries forward together.
