Abstract
The TIGER project aims to accelerate tidal energy growth in the Channel region while providing significant economic benefits for coastal communities. It responds to the need to reinvigorate the tidal energy sector in France and the UK, whose development has slowed due to a lack of pace in commissioning projects, because partnerships between SMEs are not sufficiently developed, and because tidal energy has not been presented to the public to gain political support for the sector, which discourages private investment overall.
This project aims to address these challenges by developing, testing, and demonstrating new technologies in and around the Channel area through cross-border partnerships. The feedback from this unique experiment will help build a stronger, more cost-effective case for tidal power as part of the energy mix in the UK and France. The project brings together organisations specialising in the sector, SMEs, technology developers, and academic experts to form cross-border teams to accelerate the sector's development faster and more effectively, thanks to INTERREG support. The project's partner turbine developers, supported by academic and research organisations, are working together, creating a new supply network in the UK and France. This will provide new designs for more efficient and cheaper turbines.
