Substructure
Substructure
Base/foundation connecting the device to the seafloor (e.g., pile, floating substructure).
A device’s substructure is the base/foundation that connects the device to the seafloor. Substructures are typically driven directly into the seafloor (e.g., piles) or are held in place with gravity, but are not inclusive of the mooring system used with floating devices. The design of a marine renewable energy device’s substructure directly affects the device’s deployment, survivability, maintenance requirements, and levelized cost of energy.
