Guangzhou Institute of Energy Conversion
Guangzhou Institute of Energy Conversion (GIEC), Chinese Academy of Sciences is the earliest state-owned R&D institution in renewable energy distribution in China, with most comprehensive research layout and profound influence. Founded in 1978, it is fully devoted into the R&D of basic sciences relating to new energy and renewable energy, striving to make breakthroughs in key technologies and promote commercialization of market-ready innovative energy solutions needed to achieve SDGs and carbon neutrality.
GIEC has 21 research teams, almost covering all fields of new energy and renewable energy, including biomass energy, natural gas hydrate, geothermal, solar, ocean, energy materials, energy system, and energy strategy planning, etc. GIEC pioneers in this area and made several firsts in China since its founding, such as the 1st solar water heater, 1st biogas power generation station, 1st geothermal power generation station, 1st 100kw Wave Power Generation Station, 1st 150 t/y water-phase catalytic synthesis aviation biofuel pilot, etc. It has yielded a series of scientific and technological innovation achievements through endless endeavor and has become the most important research and industrial application base for clean renewable energy in China.
GIEC is home to 5 national innovation platforms, and 10 key labs and platforms at the provincial level. Currently, there are 460 staffs including 180 senior researchers. It has gained over 200 outstanding scientific accomplishment awards at different levels. Particularly, GIEC has won thrice the National Sciences and Technology Progress Award in the fields of biomass and natural gas hydrate. GIEC has a broad cooperation with overseas partners covering 50 countries and districts, with more than 200 international programs carried out.
