Vortex-Induced Vibration
Vortex-Induced Vibration
Constant water flow applied to a rounded object will cause vibrations.
Vortex-induced vibration is a term used to describe the oscillating motion caused when a constant flow of water meets a rounded object, such as a tube. The vibrations increase as the incoming flow becomes more turbulent. While vortex-induced vibration can often cause fatigue damage for offshore structures, the motion can be captured as energy.
